Here we'll post step by step info about how we create our songs for Song Fight! Mostly we'll do this for our own sake, but some other folks may be curious about how we work our magic.Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07043104204796164263noreply@blogger.comBlogger28125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2977634832050828242.post-23988472185453544592012-02-01T13:45:00.000-08:002012-02-01T13:49:17.180-08:00Zinkline's FAWM 2011 Album "Suntory Time" Now Available!<h6 style=" font-weight: normal;font-family:arial;" class="uiStreamMessage" ft="{"type":1}">Hey All,
<h6 style=" font-weight: normal;font-family:arial;" class="uiStreamMessage" ft="{"type":1}">We are <span class="messageBody" ft="{"type":3}" style="font-size:100%;">excited and proud to announce that, in collaboration with our friend Niveous, have just posted our first album! We wrote and mostly recorded the whole thing last February for "February Album Writing Month 2011". This is an event in which musicians all over the world try to write 14 songs in the month of February. We think we've got a great batch of songs, all of which were inspired by the films of Bill Murray. It's free, or if you're feeling generous you can pay whatever you like for the album or individual songs. Donations will go toward rent and beer. Wow, that's long! Anyway we wound up going through a very atypical process to create this song. Ken and Martin couldn't make it to our Tuesday night jam, so Glen and I wrote the music. Ken wrote the lyrics bu wasn't able to play the drums and mix the song, so I wound up mixing the song and using some drums I recorded Tuesday night. I also played bass and added some synth tracks and sang. So if you don't like something in this song it's probably my fault! Anyway, here's the link:

The song started with a keyboard riff in 7/8 that we decided would sound cool if it phased over a regular 4/4 song. We started there and quickly wrote the rest of the song. It took a while to track, but we got the music down. The rest of the week was spent editing and adding more keys. This week we got together to track the vocals and mix. Everything was going well until Cubase decided it didn't want to export the keyboard parts with the rest of the track. Somehow we got everything working and our complete song is available for your enjoyment.

Video coming soon!

Be well,
Kenkenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05247870080250080886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2977634832050828242.post-25599693177428293352011-10-14T14:21:00.001-07:002011-10-14T14:28:07.828-07:00Out of a HatHey All,

The BSS crew was busy this week and we actually took part in 3 different songs in the current Songfight.

1. Berkelyn Social Scene - Our good friend Roymond was in Oakland for business and we were able to collaborate with him again. We put together a fun song with Glen and Roy on guitar, Martyr on bass, Ken on drums, Sam on rhodes, and Erin singing.

2. Merijamby - JB, the Fightmaster Jr. himself, was also in town on business and stopped by Erin and Sam's house for a visit. They put together this song in a night which also features Amy.

3. Zinkline - Power trio action at it's best with Glen, Martyr, and Ken writing a recording this quick song in a few hours the night before the deadline.

Thanks for listening, and if you are so inclined to vote, do it!

Next week... Has Been For Years<br Glen came up with the chord pattern while waiting for the rest of the guys to show up. This time we had Berminator X on lead guitar. Glen played his 11 string guitar (the 2nd G always breaks) through his amp even though he kinda hates that sound and intended to redo the 11 string straight to a mic, but ran out of time. Berminator has some sweet guitar parts on this guy. Ken steals the show with the synth lead. It was Sunday night before the deadline when Glen finally had time (not without marital bargaining) to lay down some vocals. This was particularly tough since we had no lyrics in this 11th hour. So he made them up as he was recording. That was kind of fun for him, because he didn’t know where the song was going. Anyway, we love the song. Glen wishes the vocals and lyrics were stronger, and he could re-record the rhythm guitar, but all the other guys did awesome stuff, especially Ken! Martin played some sweet bass too, and he championed my weird time changes. Hopefully you all will like the way it came to together as well.

BSSkenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05247870080250080886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2977634832050828242.post-12782159523305461252011-08-18T10:56:00.000-07:002011-08-18T11:01:21.551-07:00We moved! We moved to a nice clean well appointed rehearsal room at a professional facility in Oakland. It's awesome! Pictures coming soon. Over the months we have still been entering Song Fight! pretty regularly, though we haven't been updating this blog. You can find all our entries here:

Probably because it's been the usual around here, writing songs and recording them.

We are currently working on 14 songs to satisfy the www.fawm.org challenge to write 14 songs during the 28 days of February. We're pretty much done at this point. We've got all the songs written and most of them recorded. We'll be finishing up the recordings in the next few weeks and then posting the album we will probably call, "Suntory Time."

You can hear one of the tracks currently titled "Boron Rod" at www.songfight.org.

Be well,
Kenkenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05247870080250080886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2977634832050828242.post-54308287736160348342010-09-17T11:18:00.001-07:002010-09-17T11:19:36.592-07:00We Did All The StyleNot sure how we got through this week, but we made it. This week we put together an upbeat song, but couldn't get it together to make a solid recording. So, we got all the parts together and I edited them so we could hear the basic idea. Next week, we track for real.kenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05247870080250080886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2977634832050828242.post-65976099427240628362010-08-18T11:31:00.000-07:002010-08-18T11:33:13.717-07:00When Did You KnowA full house at the BSS party last night. Sam, Glen, Martyr, and I were joined by Ryan and Paul. We recorded a funk song complete with Rhodes (Sam) and Saxophone (Paul). Not sure where this is going, but we have over a week to figure it all out. Stay tuned.kenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05247870080250080886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2977634832050828242.post-66099226242965116942010-08-06T18:02:00.000-07:002010-08-07T10:14:02.472-07:00Hardly a Moment as I understand it:

1- Ken buys very cool elaborate capo that allows individual strings to be fretted. This is the perfect gift for the jangly open chord master known as Ryan (Berminator X).

2- Tuesday night BSS at the rehersal space in Oakland: I arrive to find Ken and Ryan already there. Ryan has the fancy capo on his guitar and is playing some Kinsella like open goodness.

3- When you hear music it is best to pick up an instrument and compliment it. I have Martin's bass from the Song Fight Live (I have a truck). So I plug in and the power trio starts jamming. The fruits of this jam would become what we know as Verse A.

4- Martin arrives and we're playing. The beat keeps going, the chords keep jangling and I gesture to Martin to take over the bass rather than play my guitar that is set up and ready to go.

5- We are now a quartet. The jam develops into what will be known as Verse B and the intro.

6- After the improvisation comes to an end, we feel the time crunch to write something before 11:00pm when the neighbors will inevitably knock and complain if they hear drums.

7- "So what do we have?" We got some versey parts and some very pretty intro parts. "We need a chorus!"

8- Ryan has a complicated syncopated idea. In trying to understand it, I write my part which is a dumbed down version but i think it accentuates the rock. This chorus is in a wildly different tempo than what we were doing. This is a good thing, we don't want to make an ambient tune. After that jam, we decide it is indeed chorus like and we will make it work. It is close enough to double time that we make the adjustments so that it will be in double time.

9- We have all the parts now, we need to assemble them into a structure. We come up with : Intro/ verse A verse B/ Verse A/ Verse B/ Chorus/ verse A/ Verse B / double chorus.

10- it is 10:45 on a Tuesday night. We need to get some takes down to work with. We're at 4:30, this may need some editing. We get a couple of takes down where we made it all the way through with no major mistakes.

11- Wednesday- Ken makes a rough mix of the 2 takes. Then on via the internet asks us what all the chords were.

12- I reply with my interpretation of the chords. I fill out all the minors majors diminished and 7ths even though they weren't all played. I like to know the options and implications.

13- Ken throws together a MIDI version of the song based on my chordal interpretation and the recordings. This step is key, MIDI sounds terrible and stale and like Muzak, but it displays how well the song flows and what structure adjustments there might need be.

14- Ryan writes some lyric kernels which give a vibe for the song, and I believe the stanzas survived.

15- Ken writes more lyrics. The improver makes it quite a nice set of lyrics.

16- The 2nd Tuesday in the song cycle arrives. Sam can't make it, though he and Erin stop by later to say Hi.

17- Martin hasn't arrived so Ryan Glen and Ken decide to review the song and try and lay down the song with tighter conviction. We figure we can overdub the bass.

18- Before we get to start actually tracking, after spending a while rehearsing and remembering what we played a week earlier, Martin arrives. This is good we can record live as a full band.

19- True to nearly every song I ever wrote with Ryan this song starts with solo bass. usually Ryan is the bass player, but this time it's Martin starting solo. Who knew a click track was a foreign entity to Martin? I ask Ken to conduct so we can all come in on the one. Martin has a lot of jazz in his bass, it's hard to find the one.

20- Ryan and Glen along the way come up with a beautiful interlocking outro duo clean guitar thing. We have our outro!

21- Where will the solo go? One of the parts surely will be left and in need of a solo.

22- We take several takes, finally before 11:00pm arrives we have the take that everyone is reasonably comfortable with.

23- Now to figure out how those lyrics fit in this song. Martin has ideas, I have chorus ideas. Ryan has ideas. So we play the song bac over and over. People stare at the lyric sheet and come up with melodies.

24- When I hear Ryans idea for the chorus, I pretty much forget my idea. I'm really into it.

25- Ken sets up a mic and Martin rehearses to the track then lays down his ideas.

26- Ryan is up next, he comes up with what we ended up using as the melody. He sang the 3 stanzas we had many times over in the verse parts.

27-It's my turn, I decline. I'd rather develop Ryan's idea. We listen back to Martins take and Ryans take. They are very different. Martin has sauce, and lots of it, but he's not comfortable with the lyrics and the delivery is awkward. Given more time he might develop them enough.

28- We realize with the length of a Ryan Stanza our song has 6 verses. Ryan gets to work on another 2 or 3 verses. We all recognize the similarity to Karate, but ken Ryan and Glen really enjoy it.

29- Ryan does the verses and chorus. Then martin throws down the chorus harmonies. I'm scheming other back ground ooohs and ahhhs and counterpoints. Nothing i come up with improves the song. The song is due in 48 hours, we're nearly there.

30- Wednesday night, I get the kids to bed and start playing with guitar parts. I find a few ideas i really like. I submit them to Ken.

31-Thursday morning Ken chooses 2 of the ideas to add to the song, and mixes them in.

32- 9:00AM Thursday morning the song is due and Ken has submitted us.

now to make a video......

more to comeglennnyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16489241121642348940noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2977634832050828242.post-6352657428303801922010-07-21T06:29:00.000-07:002010-07-21T06:55:55.504-07:00Please Stop! I had worked up a song in MIDI and we used that as a launching point. What we ended up with was pretty close to where we started, but everyone added their little tweaks. We didn't get a solid recording, but we have another week to work on it. Sadly, we pushed our time limit playing after 11pm, but the neighbor knocked on the door and asked us to stop playing since she gets up at 4:30am. Ken drummed, Bryan played bass, and we actually had three guitar players. ROCK! Martin, Steve, and I all played guitar. (Glen was out of town.) We started out with a little riff I brought in then built the song up from there. Ken provided some lyrics which Martin sang. Due to a technical difficulty we didn't get a recording of Steve's guitar from that night but he was able to work with Ken to rerecord his tracks. Ken then worked his usual production magic on it (and sang some backing vocals, too, I think) and sent it in. Go check out the fight and vote for your favorites. It should be up till next Thursday morning.Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07043104204796164263noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2977634832050828242.post-80776063402883844932009-10-16T10:12:00.000-07:002009-10-16T10:20:10.983-07:00A cover songWe also recently did a cover song for a Song Fight! participant. Occasionally Song Fight! people will get together for a "hxaro", which in the context of Song Fight! means a surprise gift to someone consisting of a bunch of covers of his/her songs. This time around the recipient is Paco del Stinko. You can read about the event at this thread on the Song Fight! bulletin board and find links to all the covers there. Here's ours, it's of Paco's winning entry for Nur Ein 2008 round 5.Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07043104204796164263noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2977634832050828242.post-84137600667641718032009-10-16T10:04:00.000-07:002009-10-16T10:09:42.987-07:00Monkeys On My Back, Post MortemOur "Monkeys On My Back" entry is up in the current Song Fight! with 13 other songs. We wound up not doing any more recording for the song instrument wise. Special guest Lee came through with some great lyrics and vocals that Ken was able to mix in with his usual aplomb. I really like the song, it's got a nice stripped down sort of sound compared to our last song, but it's still pretty rocking. That gives us 10 days, with only one Tuesday this time.Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07043104204796164263noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2977634832050828242.post-82947484014591187462009-10-08T08:20:00.000-07:002009-10-08T09:34:01.989-07:00Monkeys on my Back, Part 2I was worried our tracks from Tuesday night were distorted and clipped because the recording levels were hot. I checked them out last night and they are loud, but usable. I did a quick mix of the basic tracks and they sound okay. I think we got a little more bleed in the tracks than usual due to rocking out a bit more and cranking up the amps. I have to email out the mp3 to the rest of the guys to see what they think. Overall, it seems like a usable performance. Now we need some vocals...kenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05247870080250080886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2977634832050828242.post-50155470312428409232009-10-07T00:39:00.000-07:002009-10-07T00:45:40.849-07:00Monkeys On My Back, Part 1
Tonight Glen and Ken and I were joined by Glen's friend Lee. Lee and Glen played guitar, Ken played drums, and I played synth bass. We jammed out for a bit then narrowed in on a couple of possible parts. Ultimately we managed to bang out a few takes of a song, in a fairly standard structure. We're not doing any odd time signatures this time but it's not as poppy as last week. It's kind of frenetic in a fun way. I'm curious to hear the how recordings sound once Ken has a chance to massage them. Hopefully we're on track to have another entry done, since we've got the music pretty much written and maybe even mostly recorded with nine days left till the deadline. At this point we need to get some lyrics written. We're going to try to have Lee continue collaborating with us from his home in a far away state, with the hope that he can sing on this track.
Samhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07043104204796164263noreply@blogger.com0
